Day 2: An Extraordinary Yes

SCRIPTURE

Luke 1:26-38

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” – Luke 1:38

Ever wonder what Mary imagined her life would look like before the angel Gabriel appeared.

Scripture doesn't tell us much about her ordinary days before that moment, but we can imagine that she had hopes for her future, just as we do. She probably didn't wake up that morning expecting an angel to tell her that she would give birth to the Son of God.

But that's exactly what happened.

Gabriel told Mary that she had found favor with God and would conceive a son named Jesus. He would be called the Son of the Most High.

The promise God's people had waited for was drawing near, and Mary would help fulfill it.

It's difficult to imagine everything that she must have been thinking. How could this happen? What would Joseph think? What would her family say?

She didn't yet know about the journey to Bethlehem, the shepherds who would come looking for her child, or the years she would spend watching Jesus grow. She didn't know how His life would change the world, or how much it would one day cost Him.

Mary’s questions did not expose a lack of faith in her, but instead, they magnified one that was obedient to trust God.

Mary didn't need to see the whole story before she offered God her yes.

Sometimes we imagine that people in the Bible had a kind of certainty we could never have, that they somehow understood everything God was doing. But Mary's story reminds us that faith doesn't require us to see the whole picture. It asks us to trust the One who does.

We will all have moments when God asks us to trust Him with the next step, even when the steps beyond it remain unclear. And when those moments come, we can remember the young woman in Nazareth who said yes to a promise she could not yet fully understand.

Prayer

God, thank You for Mary's willingness to trust You with the unknown. Help us remember that we don't need to understand every part of Your plan to follow You faithfully. Give us courage to say yes, and help us trust that You see the whole story, even when we can only see the next step. Amen.

Christmas hymn

What Child Is This?

Listen to this hymn, and consider the child Mary carried. Talk about what made Jesus different from any other child and why His birth was such an extraordinary part of God's promise.

Discussion

  1. What do you think Mary might have been feeling when Gabriel told her she would give birth to Jesus?

  2. What is one way you can practice trusting God this week, even when you don't have all the answers?
