Day 1: A Promise Worth Waiting For

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 9:2-7; Micah 5:2

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6

Have you ever wondered what it was like to wait for Jesus before anyone knew Him by name?

It's easy to forget how much waiting came before the Christmas story. We know about the angels, the shepherds, and the baby lying in a manger. We know about Mary and Joseph making their way to Bethlehem.

But on a night that probably looked ordinary to most, God fulfilled a promise generations in the making.

Imagine living before that night. Imagine hearing stories of God's faithfulness and learning how He rescued your ancestors and led them through the wilderness. Imagine hearing the prophets, telling God's people that a Savior was coming.

But when?

Isaiah spoke of a child who would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Micah said this ruler would come from Bethlehem, a place that wouldn’t have been the first choice for a great king. But these were promises of someone who would change everything. And so then the people waited.

Some waited through difficult seasons. Some watched generations pass. These were everyday people, waiting for a savior, without knowing what that might look like.

Here's what’s truly remarkable about the Christmas story: God didn't wait until the night Jesus was born to begin preparing the world for Him. He had been telling His people about the coming Savior long before Mary ever held Him in her arms.

When Jesus finally came, there was no grand entrance. The promise was fulfilled, but not as the world might have imagined.

That's part of what makes waiting so difficult for us, even today. We picture the answer before it arrives. We decide what it should look like or when it should happen. But God sees a story we can't yet see, and His faithfulness doesn't depend on our ability to understand His timing.

This Christmas, before we hurry to the manger, let's take a moment to remember the waiting that came before it. The baby in that manger fulfilled a promise God had kept for generations. And the same God who remembered His people then is still faithful today, even when we're somewhere in the middle of a story whose ending we don't yet know.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being faithful to Your promises, even through seasons when we cannot see what You're doing. When waiting is hard, help us remember the ways You have given us a steady foundation before. As we celebrate the coming of Christmas, give us eyes to see the power of the promise You fulfilled through Jesus. Amen.

Christmas hymn

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

Listen to this hymn and experience the longing of God's people for the promised Savior. Imagine what it might have felt like to wait for Him without knowing exactly when He would come.

Discussion

  1. Is there something you're waiting on God for right now?

  2. How can remembering His faithfulness help you while you wait?
