Family Ministry From Seed to Cedar
My wife, Jody Jordan and I, Cosme Jiménez Gómez, began this journey together in 2008 when we met in my homeland of Costa Rica. At that time each of us had separately been involved in missionary work for many years. In fact when we met, Jody was in Costa Rica to plan for some upcoming missions trips. I worked in tourism and as a driver so, one day a friend called and asked if I could pick up his friend at the airport, who was flying in from the USA. I immediately said yes, thinking in advance about the money and the great tip that I was going to get from his friend, Jody. Before I picked her up, I prepared my sign, which had her name written in big letters, "Jody Jordan". This was so that she would recognize me, as we had never met. The moment she came out and saw my sign, she started walking towards me and I simply said in my mind, "could this beautiful woman be my wife?!" Four years later we were married in Costa Rica, both in a civil and church ceremony. Several months later we had yet another ceremony in Tennessee. Of course my friend (who I did the favor for, by picking Jody up at the airport) was in our wedding and I must say that helping him was the best favor I have ever done for anyone in my entire life! We actually had three ceremonies in the end and as I have heard it said, "omne trium perfectum" - everything that comes in threes is perfect. However, ours has been a journey which has shown us that marriage is simply two imperfect people who won’t give up on each other.

Mi esposa, Jody Jordan, y yo, Cosme Jiménez Gómez, comenzamos este viaje juntos en 2008 cuando nos conocimos en mi país natal, Costa Rica. En ese entonces, cada uno llevaba muchos años involucrado en la obra misionera. De hecho, cuando nos conocimos, Jody estaba en Costa Rica planeando algunos viajes misioneros. Yo trabajaba en turismo y como conductor, así que un día un amigo me llamó y me preguntó si podía recoger a su amiga en el aeropuerto, que venía de Estados Unidos. Acepté de inmediato, pensando en el dinero y la generosa propina que me daría su amiga, Jody. Antes de recogerla, preparé mi cartel, que tenía su nombre escrito en letras grandes: "Jody Jordan". Esto era para que me reconociera, ya que no nos conocíamos. En cuanto salió y vio mi cartel, empezó a caminar hacia mí y yo quede pensando: "¿Podría esta hermosa mujer ser mi esposa?". Cuatro años después nos casamos en Costa Rica, tanto por el civil como por la iglesia. Varios meses después, tuvimos otra ceremonia en Tennessee. Por supuesto, mi amigo (a quien le hice el favor al recoger a Jody en el aeropuerto) estuvo presente en nuestra boda, ¡y debo decir que ayudarlo fue el mejor favor que le he hecho a alguien en mi vida! Al final, tuvimos tres ceremonias y, como he oído decir, "omne trium perfectum": todo lo que viene de tres en tres es perfecto. Sin embargo, nuestra experiencia nos ha demostrado que el matrimonio consiste de dos personas imperfectas que nunca se rinden.
Long before Jody and I met in 2008, we both sensed a calling and intense passion for missions and discipleship. She grew up in the state of Vermont and attended college there to become a teacher. She has been a teacher for about 18 years and has taught children and adults in public and private schools, both in the USA and internationally, and is certified in Spanish, ESL and Elementary Ed K-8. I grew up in Costa Rica and have worked as a police officer and in the transportation and tourism industry throughout my career. We are now able to combine our giftings and talents in international settings to be a blessing to the nations. This is our life-work. We were married in 2012 in the beautiful Central Valley of Costa Rica. We then moved to the United States where we embarked on our journey to create a fusion of language, culture and calling. During these years I received my citizenship and learned about cultural adaptability, communication and developing a Kingdom worldview. Things which are all necessary for working in international ministry. Jody focused on teaching, training and guiding missions/ adventure tours, all things which now serve us well for working in intercultural ministry. After being stateside for our first seven years of marriage, we knew it was time to get more involved in international missions and recommence our dream of working together in the nations.

Mucho antes de que Jody y yo nos conociéramos en 2008, ambos sentíamos un llamado y una intensa pasión por las misiones y el discipulado. Ella creció en el estado de Vermont y estudió allí para ser maestra en la universidad. Lleva aproximadamente 18 años como maestra y ha enseñado a niños y adultos en escuelas públicas y privadas, tanto en Estados Unidos como a nivel internacional. Está certificada en español, inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) y educación primaria desde preescolar hasta octavo grado. Yo crecí en Costa Rica y he trabajado como policía y en la industria del transporte y el turismo a lo largo de mi carrera. Ahora podemos combinar nuestros dones y talentos en entornos internacionales para ser una bendición para las naciones. Esta es nuestra misión. Nos casamos en 2012 en el hermoso Valle Central de Costa Rica. Luego nos mudamos a Estados Unidos, donde emprendimos nuestro camino para crear una fusión de idioma, cultura, y llamado. Durante estos años obtuve mi ciudadanía y aprendí sobre adaptabilidad cultural, comunicación, y el desarrollo de una cosmovisión del Reino. Todo esto es necesario para trabajar en el ministerio internacional. Jody se centró en la enseñanza, la capacitación y la guía de misiones y viajes de aventura, todo lo cual ahora nos resulta muy útil para trabajar en el ministerio intercultural. Tras vivir en Estados Unidos durante nuestros primeros siete años de matrimonio, supimos que era hora de involucrarnos más en las misiones internacionales y retomar nuestro sueño de trabajar juntos en las naciones.
That's when we decided to participate in our first Family Discipleship Training School, in 2021. It was for six months at YWAM Rancho Abierto in Baja California, Mexico. This training was amazing and was a time where God brought a lot of healing and restoration to our lives and marriage; honestly God showed us that our greatest test would become our greatest testimony. So it was in 2021 that the Lord gave us a united heart for bilingual ministry and for working with couples and families to help them experience ‘love after marriage’ and to teach and train families how to lay a firm foundation in the Lord. During the FDTS outreach we participated in a Family Camp and we were hooked! That was when we realized that not all families might choose nor be called to invest six months in a FDTS, but everyone can attend a Family Camp! These are deeply transformational experiences as they create space for healing and time for families to reconnect and see breakthroughs in ways which would not happen at home. A time to rebuild trust and reignite affection and intimacy, as well as gain tools and develop new patterns for marriage and family. Family Camps, couples seminars and family and children’s events remain at the center of our ministry.

Fue entonces cuando decidimos participar en nuestra primera Escuela de Discipulado Familiar en 2021. La capacitación duró seis meses en JUCUM Rancho Abierto en Baja California, México. Fue un tiempo maravilloso donde Dios trajo mucha sanidad y restauración a nuestras vidas y matrimonio; honestamente, Dios nos mostró que nuestra mayor prueba se convertiría en nuestro mayor testimonio. Así fue en 2021 que el Señor nos dio un corazón unido para el ministerio bilingüe y para trabajar con parejas y familias, ayudándolas a experimentar el amor después del matrimonio y a enseñar y capacitar a las familias a establecer una base sólida en el Señor. Durante el programa de FDTS, participamos en un Campamento Familiar y ¡nos encantó! Fue entonces cuando nos dimos cuenta de que no todas las familias eligen ni son llamadas a invertir seis meses en un FDTS, ¡pero todos pueden asistir a un Campamento Familiar! Estas son experiencias profundamente transformadoras, ya que crean un espacio para la sanación y tiempo para que las familias se reencuentren y vean avances que no ocurrirían en casa. Un tiempo para reconstruir la confianza y reavivar el afecto y la intimidad, así como para adquirir herramientas y desarrollar nuevos hábitos para el matrimonio y la familia. Los campamentos familiares, los seminarios para parejas y los eventos para familias e hijos siguen siendo el centro de nuestro ministerio.
It was after that first FDTS that the Lord called us to further preparation in 2023. We were able to visit many ministries in countries throughout Europe and participated in Family Camps in Denmark and Germany. This experience prepared us in our ability to work and relate with other cultures and allowed us to be able to minister to people from ‘every tongue, tribe and nation’ as the Bible says. "After this I looked, and beheld, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb." (Revelation 7:9) That experience helped train us to bring bilingual family ministry to the Americas in so many relevant ways. We work in connection with local churches, YWAM and different organizations throughout the Americas to promote family, couples and youth ministry. Part of our preparation in this endeavor came recently while we were home for the annual missions conference at Thompson Station Church in Tennessee. While back in Tennessee we met the director of the Joshua Foundation and realized how well our vision aligned with theirs. We share the common purpose in that ‘Christ would be the central focus of everything we do, and that through our work, people would develop lasting relationships, take hold of their passions, and respond in obedience to the call that Christ has given them as a family and as individuals.’ We are grateful and excited as we now look forward to many future Family Camps and events in partnership with The Joshua Foundation!

Fue después de ese primer FDTS que el Señor nos llamó a una mayor preparación en 2023. Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar muchos ministerios en países de toda Europa y participar en Campamentos Familiares en Dinamarca y Alemania. Esta experiencia nos preparó para trabajar y conectar con otras culturas, y nos permitió ministrar a personas de "toda lengua, tribu y nación", como dice la Biblia. "Después de esto miré, y vi una gran multitud, incontable, de todas las naciones, tribus, pueblos y lenguas, de pie delante del trono y en la presencia del Cordero" (Apocalipsis 7:9).
Esa experiencia nos ayudó a capacitarnos para llevar el ministerio familiar bilingüe a las Américas de muchas maneras relevantes. Trabajamos en conjunto con iglesias locales, JUCUM y diferentes organizaciones en todo el continente americano para promover el ministerio familiar, de parejas y juvenil. Parte de nuestra preparación en este proyecto se produjo recientemente, mientras estábamos en casa para la conferencia anual de misiones en la Iglesia Thompson Station en Tennessee. De regreso en Tennessee, conocimos al director de la Fundación Joshua y nos dimos cuenta de lo bien que nuestra visión coincidía con la suya. Compartimos el propósito común de que 'Cristo sería el foco central de todo lo que hacemos, y que a través de nuestro trabajo, las personas desarrollarían relaciones duraderas, se apoderarían de sus pasiones y responderían en obediencia al llamado que Cristo les ha dado como familia y como individuos'. ¡Estamos agradecidos y emocionados mientras ahora esperamos muchos campamentos familiares y eventos futuros en asociación con The Joshua Foundation!
Currently we are serving with YWAM Rancho Abierto again, where we are back as staff for the 2025 Family DTS. We are here with people from eight different nations; these include Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, Ukraine, Vietnam and USA! God continues to speak to us about our role in the restoration of international families and the importance of teaching identity in Christ and walking in unity and truth. God is giving us the nations as part of our inheritance as a bilingual/bicultural couple. We have now collectively been to Austria, Belize, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico, Slovenia, Spain and Uganda and are presently serving in family ministry in Mexico. The Great Commission contains a call to make disciples of all nations and Jesus’s words promise that the gospel will be preached to people from every tongue and tribe. May the Lord continue to use us to be a blessing to the nations~ ‘that all the peoples would praise Him’!

Actualmente servimos nuevamente con YWAM Rancho Abierto, donde regresamos como personal para la EDE Familiar 2025. Estamos aquí con personas de ocho países diferentes: Canadá, Costa Rica, México, Noruega, Singapur, Ucrania, Vietnam y Estados Unidos. Dios continúa hablándonos sobre nuestro papel en la restauración de familias internacionales y la importancia de enseñar la identidad en Cristo y caminar en unidad y verdad. Dios nos está dando las naciones como parte de nuestra herencia como pareja bilingüe y bicultural. Hemos estado juntos en Austria, Belice, Canadá, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dinamarca, República Dominicana, Ecuador, Francia, Alemania, Guatemala, Honduras, Irlanda, Italia, México, Marruecos, Nicaragua, Perú, Puerto Rico, Eslovenia, España y Uganda, y actualmente servimos en el ministerio familiar en México. La Gran Comisión contiene un llamado a hacer discípulos de todas las naciones y las palabras de Jesús prometen que el evangelio será predicado a personas de toda lengua y tribu. ¡Que el Señor continúe usándonos para ser una bendición para las naciones, para que todos los pueblos lo alaben!
