Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 2:1-20
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” – Luke 2:11
A newborn baby softens the weight of the world.
Mary and Joseph, holding their child, the Child, whose coming had been promised for generations. Can you imagine what that might have felt like? To hold a tiny prophecy in your hands.
Their journey to that moment had not been what either of them expected. It was becoming even more delicate as the decree from Caesar Augustus to register their household for the census would spark concern over the newborn King.
But Mary and Joseph faithfully obeyed God, and soon, she delivered their son, and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them at any inn.
The Savior had come, but the world didn't stop to notice.
And yet, heaven knew.
Out in the fields nearby, shepherds were watching their flocks when an angel appeared, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
Good news of great joy for all the people! A Savior had been born in Bethlehem.
When the angels left, the shepherds hurried to find the child. They found Mary and Joseph, and Jesus lying in the manger, just as the angel had said.
Strangers were coming to see Him because heaven itself had announced His arrival. Luke tells us that Mary treasured these things and pondered them in her heart.
The promise had become a person, and the world would never be the same.
This is the wonder of Christmas. God was near, in the form of Jesus, who entered the world as a child and lived among the people He came to save.
As we celebrate Christmas, we can return to that quiet scene in Bethlehem and remember that the God who made the heavens chose to come close enough to be held.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming near to us. Thank You for the faithfulness of Mary and Joseph and for the shepherds who hurried to see You and shared the good news. Help us recognize Your presence in our everyday lives. Amen.
